SCPA-EN-00003: "The Sentient Chess Board"
Item #: SCPA-00003
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCPA-00003 is to be kept in a locked containment chamber at Site-██. The chamber must be monitored by no fewer than two personnel, equipped with chess boards and sufficient knowledge of chess moves. No personnel are permitted to play this SCPA under any circumstances. In the event that SCPA-00003 becomes active, Level 3 clearance is required for any interaction with the object. The chamber must be searched once per week for any additional chess pieces that may have materialized.
Description: SCPA-00003 is a chessboard, standard in size and weight, with the notable exception that all pieces are sentient. SCPA-00003 came to the attention of the Foundation after a technician at a chess tournament reported that a piece of the board had moved by itself. Subsequent investigations revealed the anomalous nature of the board.
SCPA-A0003's primary goal is to win the game of chess that is set up on top of it. All pieces on the board can communicate with each other and have been shown to be intelligent, analytical, cunning, and able to change their behavior depending on the situation. If SCPA-00003 senses that a player cheats or attempts to break any of the rules of the game, the applicable piece will create a session-ending condition, such as self-explosion or immolation, without warning. The loss of SCPA-00003's game is taken very seriously by the object and is likely to cause it to become violent.
Pieces have been observed to materialize from seemingly nowhere to substitute for pieces that are taken or are otherwise moved off the board. Some pieces have exhibited suspected precognitive abilities, signaling moves before the opposing player has had the opportunity to make them. The Foundation is currently conducting research on how pieces materialize and whether or not SCPA-00003 is attempting to replicate games previously played.
Additional Information: SCPA-00003 was first recovered in Los Angeles, CA, at a chess tournament in which it was being used. It was quickly apparent that the board was anomalous, and it was neutralized by the Foundation with the assistance of the LAPD. Unfortunately, during the intervention, two people were injured by a self-destructing King piece.
